A young wife stays alone in her opulent apartment after her husband and her maid leave. Suddenly the doorbell rings. She opens it to find a strange gun-toting man who bursts in and chloroforms her. She later awakens and finds herself tied to the couch. The stranger warns her not to scream. They begin talking and the man implies that her husband is in danger. Very soon between the two begins a very strange attraction…
Director is Jacques Doniol-Valcroze (15 March 1920 – 6 October 1989). In 1955, he was a member of the jury at the 16th Venice International Film Festival, and in 1964 a member of the jury at the 14th Berlin International Film Festival. Most notably known for being a co-founder of Cahiers du cinéma altogether with Andre Bazin, first as a editor in chief and then as the full director.
The curator of sound is Per-Olof Petterson (Hour of The Wolf, Stimulantia, Persona, All These Women), most notably known for having worked on several films with Ingmar Bergman and other famous Swedish directors, he will change his name in the sixties in Prambo.
Although it is a bit under-produced, mostly because the lack of money, nothing is taken to chance.
The curator of decors is Jan Boleslaw, born in 1911, mostly known for his works with Mai Zetterling (Nattlek, Älskande Par)
Very paradigmatic of the movie is the opening credits’ scene, where the camera slowly pan in the dark to a minimal op art tableau affixed to a bare wall, stunningly stopping at a slowly-blurring black circle. The black encompass the movie and we are entering the dream-reality.
The editor was Sophie Bhaud, who worked previously with Doniol-Valcroze on La Bien-Aimée (1967 too).
The Vhsrip is meaning to be long 1h22m but the film in itself is only 1h18mm, because, as it is prefixed in the very beginning, “cette video cassette comporte des bandes annonces a la fin du film”.
Haneke has surely seen this film.
