Quote:
Clemente Celidônio, known as Quelé, upon returning to his home in Pajeú das Flores (in Pernambuco), is shocked by the fact that his sister was raped by a stranger, identified only by a scar on his face and a missing finger. Overcome with hatred, Quelemente sets off in search of the stranger, swearing vengeance. But the road is long, and the journey holds decisive surprises for him.A few years after its 1969 release Quelé do Pajeú could no longer be tracked down in film archives and cinematheques in Brazil, and became considered a lost film. This was the case for more than forty years until, in 2016, writer and filmmaker Paulo Wences Duarte found an Italian-subtitled copy of the film in Europe. Thanks to Duarte’s efforts, Quelé do Pajeú can finally be appreciated again.
Quelé do Pajeú is widely considered to be one of the finest Cangaço films, a popular genre of Brazilian cinema that deals with the myths and folklores of a legendary group of bandits from Brazil’s Northeast who supposedly fought against the rich and powerful in society, albeit brutally, and frequently clashed with law enforcement. Quelé do Pajeú is rich in detail of Cangaço life, brilliantly recreating their daily clothing and mannerisms.
