Synopsis:
In 1944, the U.S. Army and Allied forces plan a huge invasion landing in Normandy, France. Despite bad weather, General Dwight D. Eisenhower gives the okay and the Allies land at Normandy. General Norma Cota travels with his men onto Omaha Beach. With much effort, and lost life, they get off the beach, traveling deep into French territory. The German military, due to arrogance, ignorance and a sleeping Adolf Hitler, delay their response to the Allied landing, with crippling results.

Synopsis:
West Side Story is the award-winning adaptation of the classic romantic tragedy, “Romeo and Juliet”. The feuding families become two warring New York City gangs- the white Jets led by Riff and the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. Their hatred escalates to a point where neither can coexist with any form of understanding. But when Riff’s best friend (and former Jet) Tony and Bernardo’s younger sister Maria meet at a dance, no one can do anything to stop their love. Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away. Then the Sharks and Jets plan a rumble under the highway – whoever wins gains control of the streets. Maria sends Tony to stop it, hoping it can end the violence. It goes terribly wrong, and before the lovers know what’s happened, tragedy strikes and doesn’t stop until the climactic and heartbreaking ending.

“Herakles” is a 1962 short film and the first film by the German director Werner Herzog, then 20 years old. The film relates to six of the twelve labors of Heracles. The film starts with shots of young male bodybuilders working out in a gym, posing on a stage and flexing their muscles. Each of the labors are then announced by on-screen text in the form of a question, followed by related scenes of modern challenges inter-cut with the bodybuilders.

Ce film, ou plutôt ce “divertissement cinématographique”, tourné principalement dans les châteaux et les paysages sauvages de la Provence, a été tiré d’un chapître d’un livre fantastique du XVIIIème “Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse” de Jan POTOCKI. Il s’agit du récit, fait par une jeune femme, Rebecca, au héros du roman, de ses noces ésotériques avec les gémeaux de la Kabbale et de son initiation par son frère aux pouvoirs surnaturels. Pour adapter ce récit, Paul VECCHIALI a méler des images réalistes à de l’iconographie et de l’animation abstraite. Il a utilisé pour les dialogues le texte intégral de POTOCKI, n’y ajoutant qu’une seule phrase, la dernière du film. Le choix des couleurs répond aussi à des critères symboliques : le jaune pour les démons, le rouge pour la Kabbale, le bleu pour les divinités. Sur le plan de la photographie, ALEKAN et VECCHIALI ont réalisé des prouesses techniques : utilisation du plan fixe, photos retouchées, etc…

In the not-too-distant future, two fully clothed men sit in a bathtub at a home for war veterans. After a few minutes of not saying anything to each other, one of them breaks the silence by saying “do you come here often?” The first man introduces himself as a secret agent, while the second man introduces himself as an expert on chemical and biological warfare. They discuss changes to humand and plant biology caused by chemical warfare in some un-named recent war. This ultimate masterpiece is set in the far future where a young man, bored by his surroundings, blasts off into space with only his cat and some robots for company. Inspiré par l’oeuvre de Charles Fourier, l’inventeur du phalanstère, et par des peintures du Portugais Eduardo Luiz, qui réalise les dessins de ce court métrage, La Brûlure des mille soleils est une fable amoureuse, une invitation à l’utopie et à l’amour des femmes, mais plus encore une refléxion sur la différence, sur l’Autre. Un jeune homme des temps futurs, découvre par hasard deux inventions qui lui permette de voyager aux confins de l’espace. Il se laisse guider par le hasard et se retrouve à l’autre bout de l’univers où évolue une autre Terre. Le temps lui est compté, mais il décide de rencontrer ces autres humains. Dans ce monde, le nombre 8 est le nombre parfait, nécessaire pour atteindre la plénitude et la perfection. Apparaît une jeune femme, curieuse elle aussi de cet étranger venu de si loin. Une histoire d’amour naît, impossible comme toute les histoires d’amour. Le manque d’ouverture et de perspective, la trop forte pression de l’expérience et du vécu, amèneront, bien malgré lui, le jeune homme à une vérité essentielle de l’existence.

Le montage de ce film a été confié à Chris Marker, sans aucun doute inspiré par ce scénario original. De nombreuses références à l’univers markérien, dont le chat, apparaissent de ci de là dans ce court métrage poétique et navigant sur les franges de la perfection.

Synopsis:
Penny Applebee’s parents were divorced when she was quite young and she grew up with her mother. After her mother’s death, the wheelchair-bound Penny has accepted her father’s invitation to live with him. She arrives only to learn that her father is away though her stepmother – who she is meeting for the first time – proves to be quite welcoming. On her first night however, she sees a light in the summerhouse and upon investigation, sees her father sitting there, apparently dead. Others can find nothing there and tell her she must have imagined it. She later sees his body in library and then again in the pool. She comes to believe that her stepmother and her father’s friend, Doctor Pierre Gerard, are plotting to drive her insane. She gets a sympathetic ear from Bob, the chauffeur, who feels there has to be some rational explanation for what has been happening.

The Dirty Dozen meets the Stiff Upper Lip. A British Petroleum executive (Sir Michael Caine) is assigned to work with the British Army in North Africa handling port duties for incoming fuels. This gives him the official rank of Captain in the British Army. The Colonel (Nigel Green), in charge of the Dirty Dozen, is told he must have a British officer accompany his men on a dangerous mission four hundred miles behind German lines and is saddled with the Petroleum executive, who tries to argue his way out by saying that his contract states he is to only work port duties. That argument is lost on the Brigade Commander (Harry Andrews), who simply points out that the executive is wearing a British uniform. The real leader of the Dirty Dozen (Nigel Davenport), a released prisoner, doesn’t need or want the British officer, who’s supposed to be in charge, but he’s promised an extra two thousand British pounds sterling if he gets him back alive. Disguised as Italians, their trek across Rommel’s Africa includes meeting and battling many kinds of enemies.

The final film of stars Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is an elegy for the death of the Old West from writer Arthur Miller and director John Huston.
